Learning Across Generations: Multimodal Innovation in Educator Preparation

2026 NYSATE/NYACTE Annual Fall Conference
Gideon Putnam Resort, Saratoga Springs, NY

October 21-23, 2026

What does it mean to innovate in educator preparation in a time of social, technological, and political change? How are educator preparation programs reimagining teaching, learning, and collaboration to support future educators working in increasingly complex educational contexts? Across institutions, schools, and communities, educators are exploring multimodal approaches to learning that respond to the needs of diverse learners and evolving professional expectations.

Multimodal innovation in educator preparation spans diverse approaches to teaching and learning that create high-quality learning environments. Multimodality involves integrating multiple forms of communication, including language, visual representation, gesture, spatial design, sound, and digital media, to create meaning (Kress, 2010; Jewitt, 2012).

This innovation can take shape through new pedagogical models, interdisciplinary and family- and community-engaged partnerships, expanded experiential and clinical learning opportunities, and creative applications of emerging technologies. Together, these approaches expand how knowledge is constructed, shared, and applied in educator preparation programs. At the same time, programs must respond to broader challenges facing the profession, including teacher shortages, educator retention, shifting policy contexts, and the changing social and emotional needs of students.

Learning across generations is central to multimodal innovation. Faculty, teacher candidates, PK–12 partners, and community members bring varied experiences, perspectives, and knowledge that shape how educator preparation programs evolve. These generational differences offer opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and innovation as we collectively prepare educators for classrooms that are themselves increasingly diverse, dynamic, and interconnected.
