Emily Hayden is formerly an Association Professor in Literacy Education in the School of Education, Iowa State University; and currently a Literacy Specialist for the Strategic Education Research Partnership (serpinstitute.org). At SERP she develops curriculum and supports implementation and evaluation of projects including the Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI), which is designed for middle school students who are reading 2+ years below grade level. Prior to earning her PhD in Educational Studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Emily was a K-12 teacher, literacy specialist, and special education administrator in public Title 1 schools in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska where she worked with diverse students in high poverty/high mobility settings. Her teaching experience spans K-12 as well as undergraduate and graduate students at the university level. She has served on the Iowa Department of Education's Statewide Literacy Leadership Team and has worked with teachers, researchers, community leaders, and policymakers to design curriculum and professional development.
