SUMMARY:Teaching Writing Through Zines: Multimodal Approaches to Modeling Composing\, Collaboration and Voice
DESCRIPTION:I focus my presentation briefly on the pedagogical literature surrounding Zines but I &nbsp\;center mostly on the process by which I introduce zine-making to my new secondary ELA teachers\, highlighting particular tools I use to do so: how-to zine videos from teenagers themselves\, pre-writing and visual composing strategies\, stepsheets\, gallery walks and single-point rubrics. I will also show examples of both the collaborative Zine and the individual Zines new teachers made. Starting out as new teachers with their adolescent students so entrenched in the digital realm\, I hoped to get us writing together by emphasizing key structures vital to the composing process\, which hands-on zine-making makes evident.&nbsp\;\nThroughout the course\, we focus on questions of student voice and its relationship to the visual (Thomsen\, 2014) as well as the multimodal and multigeneric (Early\, 2022). The zine is one way we think through these questions as the new teachers consider not only what their voice might sound like but what it might look like on the page. The focus on zines\, in addition to introducing teachers to a less common classroom genre\, allows us to consider the important balance in writing instruction between process and product\, including attention to writing as making.&nbsp\;\n

SUMMARY:Generating Multimodal Opportunities for Teaching and Learning with Teacher Candidates
DESCRIPTION:Using a teacher inquiry method\, we present the results of our investigation as to how candidates in teacher education integrated multimodal theory and practices into program assignments. One hundred ten candidates (N=110) participating in three sections of a graduate literacy course served as the data source for the inquiry. Our inquiry’s purpose was to investigate the candidates’ beliefs about the efficacy of multimodal compositions in classroom teaching\, and the extent to which they used artificial intelligence tools when completing them. We required candidates to complete three multimodal projects using conventional and/or AI supported composition strategies.&nbsp\;When analyzing the data\, we prepared a frequency count to determine the percentage of hand-composed versus AI-produced artifacts for each multimodal project\, and we conducted a thematic analysis of their written reflections and online discussion posts to identify recurring patterns and themes about the use of multimodal compositions.&nbsp\;Results of our inquiry revealed that the candidates enthusiastically endorsed the use of multimodal compositions in classroom teaching\, and they believed that such practices to be particularly effective and inclusive when teaching emergent bilingual students and students with reading difficulties. Candidates also expressed concern that multimodal compositions might foster an overemphasis on the product of student compositions rather than the processes involved when learning new concepts and skills. We conclude by asserting that by employing&nbsp\;multimodal forms of expression in classroom teaching\, our candidates will be better able to support and advance their students’ learning.

SUMMARY:Preparing Educators Who Thrive: The Four Pillars of Emotional Regulation\, Mindset\, Identity\, and Habits
DESCRIPTION:This interactive &nbsp\;workshop explores how educator preparation programs can better prepare future &nbsp\;educators for the realities of today's classrooms by developing four &nbsp\;foundational pillars: emotional regulation\, mindset\, identity\, and habits. &nbsp\;While teacher candidates receive extensive training in instructional &nbsp\;practices and content knowledge\, many are not explicitly taught the internal &nbsp\;skills needed to navigate uncertainty\, manage challenges\, and sustain &nbsp\;long-term success in the profession.Participants will examine how these four &nbsp\;pillars influence educator effectiveness\, resilience\, confidence\, and &nbsp\;well-being. Through reflection activities\, discussion\, and practical tools\, &nbsp\;attendees will explore strategies that can be integrated into coursework\, &nbsp\;clinical experiences\, mentoring\, and supervision. The workshop draws on &nbsp\;experiences from K–12 teaching\, instructional coaching\, educator preparation\, &nbsp\;and transformational coaching to provide a practical framework that supports &nbsp\;both educator development and retention.Participants will leave with &nbsp\;actionable strategies and a framework they can immediately apply to better &nbsp\;prepare future educators to thrive in an increasingly complex educational &nbsp\;landscape. \n\nMATERIALS PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING\nNo advance &nbsp\;preparation is required. Participants are encouraged to bring a notebook\, &nbsp\;laptop\, or device for reflection and note-taking.The facilitator will provide &nbsp\;a workshop packet that includes the Four Pillars Framework\, guided reflection &nbsp\;questions\, educator-preparation scenarios\, the Emotional Zoom-Out Tool\, the &nbsp\;Circumstance → Thought → Emotion → Action → Result (CTEAR) coaching model\, &nbsp\;and implementation worksheets. These handouts are designed to support active &nbsp\;participation during the workshop and serve as resources that attendees can &nbsp\;immediately adapt for educator preparation\, mentoring\, supervision\, and &nbsp\;professional learning settings.Participants are also encouraged to bring &nbsp\;examples of challenges they have observed in teacher candidates\, novice educators\, &nbsp\;or educator preparation programs. These examples will be used during &nbsp\;reflection\, discussion\, and application activities throughout the &nbsp\;session.Attendees will leave with completed handouts\, practical tools\, and an &nbsp\;action plan for implementing the Four Pillars Framework within their own &nbsp\;professional context.

SUMMARY:Teacher identity in a time of significant change: Telling stories through social media
DESCRIPTION:The profession of teaching is changing at an unprecedented speed. Teachers are tasked with adapting to a changing technological and instructional landscape\, increased mental health concerns of students\, and politicization of their work\; understanding the ways in which teachers conceptualize their professional identities can help to address persistent challenges such as teacher retention and aligning teacher education with the current context of teaching. This presentation describes findings from a mixed-methods study investigating how teachers construct and express their professional identity through Instagram posts. The methodology combines qualitative content analysis of Instagram posts with focus group discussions to provide rich\, contextualized data on teacher professional identity development. Turning to Instagram as a source of information about teachers’ professional identities reflects the ubiquitous nature of social media in the lives of teachers\, yet the approach and questions are novel because most social media research about teachers has focused on the ways in which they adopt tools or learn new instructional techniques.

SUMMARY:Enhancing Student Voice in Special Education Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Student voice and student engagement in special education classrooms are often limited. In many classrooms\, teachers remain at the center of instruction by providing directions\, while students primarily serve as receivers of information. This study examined the impact of professional learning on student voice and engagement in a 12:1:1 high school special education setting. Four teachers participated in a pre-assessment survey about student voice in the classroom and indicated their interest in receiving training. Three modes of presentation were offered: visual aids\, video modeling\, and professional development. Teachers selected different modes for training: one selected video modeling\, one selected visual supports\, and two selected professional development. Pre-assessment data were collected through teacher observations using the Danielson rubric\, and post-assessment data were collected after the intervention. Teachers who selected modeling and professional development improved their instructional practices and student engagement ratings by two points\, while the teacher who selected visual aids improved by one point. Overall\, the results suggest that student engagement improved following the intervention. Limitations of the study include the small sample size and the relationship between the evaluator and the teachers.

SUMMARY:What Do We Do When the Mentor Teachers Are Gone? One Rural College's Rethinking of K-12 Partnerships
DESCRIPTION:How can a rural educator preparation program sustain reciprocal K-12 partnerships when mentor teacher shortages make traditional student teaching placements in local school districts scarce? This roundtable presents one college's response: a course-embedded clinical model organized around preparation\, site visits\, and guided reflections. Grounded in reciprocity and third space theory\, the model creates repeated\, intentional points of contact among candidates\, faculty\, teachers\, and principals\, even (or despite) when full student teaching placements are unavailable locally. Emerging findings suggest this flexible approach sustains relationships\, supports rural schools facing staffing constraints\, and functions as an early workforce-development strategy. Attendees will leave with a practical model adaptable to placement-limited contexts and will be invited to share their own partnership strategies from rural and other settings.

SUMMARY:Not All Play Is Equal: The Importance of Child-Directed Free Play for Socio-Emotional Development in an Age of Rising Mental Health Concerns
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this presentation is to focus on the unique benefits of free play with open-ended materials in childhood. This is important given the fact that children have limited opportunities for free play in and outside of school (Gray\, 2011\; Yang et al.\, 2025). I utilize research collected through observations of free play at a nature-based early childhood program\, coupled with the CASEL framework (2020)\, to demonstrate how free play is positioned to foster self-awareness\, self-management\, responsible decision making\, social awareness\, and relationship skills. I explain why focusing on socio-emotional wellbeing is critical in today's mental health landscape (CDC\, 2024\; WHO\, 2025).

SUMMARY:Opportunities\, Obstacles\, and Outcomes: Designing an Exploratory Case Study of Student Teaching & The Science of Reading Implementation
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, a profound shift has reshaped early literacy education across the United States: the widespread legislative and institutional adoption of the Science of Reading (SoR). This movement prioritizes explicit\, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, vocabulary\, and comprehension.&nbsp\;As one of the pilot campuses in New York State's The Path Forward Literacy Initiative\, St. Francis College's teacher preparation programs join many others in redesigning course syllabi in order to better align&nbsp\;with&nbsp\;the&nbsp\;SoR&nbsp\;research. &nbsp\;Our work thus far has demonstrated that&nbsp\;a challenge arises during the supervised student teaching semester. Student teachers are&nbsp\;frequently&nbsp\;caught between two worlds: the evidence-based frameworks taught in their college&nbsp\;courses\,&nbsp\;and the&nbsp\;practices often used by&nbsp\;their&nbsp\;cooperating teachers.&nbsp\;This study examines this intersection\, evaluating how student teachers navigate the mentorship of their&nbsp\;cooperating teachers&nbsp\;and how they&nbsp\;ultimately perform&nbsp\;when formally&nbsp\;observed&nbsp\;by&nbsp\;college&nbsp\;faculty&nbsp\;members.&nbsp\; Because the study will still be in progress\, we are&nbsp\;very interested&nbsp\;in sharing the design of the study\, including tools used\, and our&nbsp\;initial&nbsp\;impressions and questions as the process unfolds.

SUMMARY:Placement Matters: Student Teacher Reflections on Coordination in Graduate Teacher Education
DESCRIPTION:This mixed-methods study explores graduate student teachers’ perceptions of placement coordination within teacher preparation programs. As field experiences play a critical role in developing effective teaching practice\, the process of how placements are coordinated—including communication\, support systems\, and alignment between university expectations and school-based experiences—can significantly influence candidate development. Despite the importance of these experiences\, variability in placement processes may lead to inconsistencies in preparation and overall candidate satisfaction.\nUsing a combination of surveys and focus group interviews\, this study examines graduate student teachers’ experiences with placement coordination. The survey component gathers broad quantitative data on perceived clarity of communication\, responsiveness of support personnel\, and overall satisfaction with placement assignments. The focus group component provides qualitative insight into participants’ lived experiences\, allowing for deeper exploration of challenges\, strengths\, and suggestions for improvement within the placement process.\nThis study specifically investigates how well placement experiences align with program expectations\, the effectiveness of communication between candidates\, universities\, and school sites\, and the degree to which candidates feel supported throughout their fieldwork. By integrating both quantitative and qualitative data\, the study aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how placement coordination impacts the teacher preparation experience.\nThe findings of this research are intended to inform improvements in teacher education programs by identifying strengths and areas for growth in current placement practices. Ultimately\, the study seeks to contribute practical recommendations for enhancing communication systems\, strengthening support structures\, and improving alignment between university coursework and field-based experiences\, with the goal of better preparing future educators for success in the classroom.

SUMMARY:Teachers and Generative AI: Current Practices and Professional Learning Needs in K-12
DESCRIPTION:This study used a survey research design to examine K–12 in-service teachers’ practices and perceptions regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Data were collected from 202 teachers between May 2024 and December 2025 to explore teachers’ AI use\, perceived benefits and challenges\, and professional learning needs. Findings indicate that AI use remains in an early adoption stage and is not yet consistently integrated into daily teaching practice. Teachers primarily used AI to improve efficiency through lesson planning\, content generation\, assessments\, and instructional support. Commonly used tools included&nbsp\;ChatGPT&nbsp\;and&nbsp\;MagicSchool AI\, reflecting teachers’ preference for accessible and practical platforms. Teachers also reported actively reviewing and adapting AI-generated content to align with instructional goals and student needs\, suggesting that AI functions as a support tool rather than a replacement for teacher judgment. While some educators explored AI for differentiation and personalized learning\, more transformative and student-centered uses remained limited. The findings suggest important implications for teacher education and professional development programs\, emphasizing the need for ongoing support that promotes ethical\, pedagogically meaningful\, and student-centered AI integration.

SUMMARY:Teaching Beyond the Algorithm: Behavioral Science\, AI\, and Authentic Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Generative AI has fundamentally disrupted traditional approaches to writing assessment in higher education\, rendering text-based AI detectors inadequate and ethically problematic tools for evaluating student authorship. This presentation introduces the Write–Present–Defend (WPD) model as a multimodal\, theoretically grounded assessment framework that addresses AI-related academic integrity concerns while simultaneously advancing oracy\, metacognition\, and disciplinary communication. Drawing on behavior-analytic theory and authentic assessment pedagogy\, WPD repositions integrity as an assessment design problem rather than a surveillance challenge. The model's five stages increase the effort cost of AI substitution\, provide contingent feedback\, and develop skills valued across generations of learners and professionals. Attendees will examine implementation tools including dual rubrics\, defense question banks\, behavioral indicators of authorship\, and a student AI-disclosure framework. Implications for teacher preparation programs\, faculty professional learning\, and institutional AI governance are discussed.

SUMMARY:From General Feedback to Curriculum-Based Coaching: Using Mixed Reality Simulations to Develop HQIM-Aligned Teacher Practice
DESCRIPTION:The presentation explores how the use of BranchED’s Mixed Reality Simulation (MRS) can operationalize Education First’s Meaningful Shift #3: “From General Feedback to Curriculum-Based Coaching.” Specifically\, the work investigates how multimodal simulation environments enable candidates to practice high-leverage instructional behaviors\, engage in structured reflection cycles\, and receive curriculum-anchored feedback before entering high-stakes classroom environments.&nbsp\;The presentation also examines how MRS supports movement across the Teacher Candidate-to-HQIM Practitioner Learning Continuum by strengthening teacher candidates’ confidence\, responsiveness\, and ability to transfer rehearsal-based learning into authentic teaching settings.&nbsp\;At the center of this work is the belief that effective teacher preparation requires opportunities for interactive practice\, emotionally safe risk-taking\, and aligned coaching experiences that mirror the instructional realities candidates will encounter in classrooms using HQIM. This presentation\, therefore\, explores simulation as a scalable and practice-centered approach to strengthening coherence between educator preparation and district instructional expectations.&nbsp\;Attendees will engage in reflective discussion around how simulated learning environments can support adaptive instructional expertise\, curriculum literacy\, and equitable access to authentic teaching practice before full classroom responsibility.

SUMMARY:Flexible TPA Framework for Accountability\, Improvement\, and Innovation
DESCRIPTION:This presentation focuses on the results of an implementation evaluation of a college-wide teacher performance assessment (TPA) framework which was developed collaboratively by the College's Assessment Taskforce in 2022-2023. The assessment was implemented in 13 initial and dual certification programs in 2023-2026. The TPA framework was intentionally designed to be adapted to varied programmatic contexts\, to emphasize local knowledge and expertise\, to prevent a narrowing of teacher education curriculum\, and to encourage innovation.&nbsp\;The three-year implementation study consisted of investigation of implementation fidelity (based on faculty interviews and reviews of program materials)\, participant satisfaction (based on completer survey)\, and educational effectiveness (based on the analysis of assessment data). We briefly describe the results of these three-part investigation and discuss the TPA framework potential to serve multiple purposes of accountability\, improvement\, and innovation.

SUMMARY:From Curriculum to Classroom: Implementing the Hunter SOE/NYS Council for Developmental Disabilities Decision-Making Curriculum in Partnership with NYS's P-12 Schools
DESCRIPTION:As schools increasingly seek to prepare students for a complex and rapidly changing world\, decision making has emerged as a critical competency for success in education\, employment\, community participation\, and independent living. In response to this need\, the Hunter College School of Education\, in partnership with the New York State Council on Developmental Disabilities (NYS CDD)\, developed the Hunter SOE Decision-Making Curriculum\, a comprehensive P–12 resource designed to explicitly teach decision-making skills to students with and without disabilities. This presentation examines the development\, implementation\, and statewide dissemination of the curriculum through successful partnerships with hundreds of schools across New York State. Grounded in principles of self-determination\, student agency\, and inclusive education\, the curriculum provides developmentally appropriate lessons that help students evaluate options\, consider consequences\, solve problems\, and make informed choices across academic\, social\, and real-world contexts.Presenters will share lessons learned from collaborating with P–12 educators\, administrators\, and community partners to bring decision-making instruction into classrooms\, highlighting implementation successes\, educator feedback\, and examples of student impact. Particular attention will be given to how the curriculum aligns with the emerging NYS Portrait of a Graduate Framework by fostering essential competencies such as critical thinking\, communication\, collaboration\, responsible citizenship\, self-advocacy\, and lifelong learning.Attendees will explore how explicit decision-making instruction can serve as a powerful bridge between academic content and real-world readiness\, supporting students in becoming confident\, engaged\, and self-directed learners. The session will offer practical strategies for integrating decision-making instruction into existing curricula while demonstrating how school-university partnerships can successfully scale innovative educational initiatives that prepare all students for future success.

SUMMARY:Learning to Teach Reading by Teaching Reading: Outcomes of a Structured Tutoring Initiative in Teacher Education
DESCRIPTION:Teacher preparation programs are increasingly challenged to create meaningful clinical experiences that strengthen candidates’ understanding of evidence based literacy instruction while responding to evolving expectations surrounding the Science of Reading. This presentation highlights a course embedded tutoring initiative implemented within EDR 360: Foundations of Literacy at SUNY Plattsburgh\, in which undergraduate teacher candidates provide structured early literacy intervention to K–2 students through the Reading Ready tutoring model. This project examines how participation in structured literacy tutoring experiences influences teacher candidates’ literacy content knowledge\, instructional decision making\, and self efficacy related to teaching early reading. Coursework artifacts and field based reflections are used to explore candidates’ developing understanding of evidence based literacy practices across the five pillars of reading\, as well as their perceptions of student growth and professional learning.Presenters will discuss the design and implementation of this university/school partnership\, including opportunities\, challenges\, and practical considerations for embedding structured tutoring experiences within teacher preparation coursework. Findings and lessons learned may offer a promising model for educator preparation programs seeking innovative\, practice based approaches to literacy instruction and clinical learning.

SUMMARY:How do Key Assignments help our Program?
DESCRIPTION:The special education faculty at SUNY Geneseo rewrote the Teaching Students with Disabilities Programs All Grades to meet the new certification in New York State. &nbsp\;We also needed to think about the key assignments for our classes and the skills we wanted to measure to meet the Standards for the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). &nbsp\;We wanted to be sure to develop key assignments that would meet AAQEP Standards but also meet the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standards as well so that we could apply for recognition from CEC as well. (Although we have faced some funding issues\, we are hopeful this will be a priority for the 2026-2027 academic year). &nbsp\;The overarching goal we had to referring to for our assignments was making sure we prepared students for the changing workforce they would enter and created problem solvers who could teach all students. Our key assignments reflect a broad range of skills and start in Block I of our program and culminate in Block VI\, student teaching. &nbsp\;We would like to share our thought process with you and the rubrics developed.

SUMMARY:Designing for Belonging: Retooling Online Courses Using a Humanizing Lens
DESCRIPTION:As teacher educators\, the way we design our own courses sends a powerful message to our students\, who are future teachers themselves\, about what equitable\, engaging\, and caring instruction looks like in practice. At the same time\, professional development works best when it feels less like a presentation and more like a conversation. This workshop seeks to honor both of these ideas by creating a collaborative\, low-stakes environment where participants can take an honest look at their own online courses and explore humanizing strategies grounded in research. By the end of the session\, participants will have retooled a course artifact ready to use in their online course. More importantly\, they will leave thinking differently about what it means to design online learning experiences that are equitable\, inclusive\, and worthy of the diverse students they serve. The purpose of this workshop is to share common problems of practice and solutions developed to address such problems. The two main problems discussed are surface-level reflections in candidates’ work\, and limited practice interacting with parents over difficult topics. After exploring candidates’ work before and after the use of an AI chatbot\, participants will be coached to develop their own chatbot prompt to push their own candidates’ thinking or experiences in the college classroom.\n\nMATERIALS PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING\nA Wi-Fi enabled laptop or tablet.\nA sample artifact from a current or future online course\, such as a syllabus\, a weekly module introduction\, a major assignment description\, or a discussion board prompt.\nAccess to their institution's Learning Management System (LMS)\, such as Canvas or Blackboard\, if participants wish to build their redesigned elements directly into their course.

SUMMARY:From Data Silos to Real-Time Insight: Multimodal Innovation in Educator Preparation Through Watermark and Power BI
DESCRIPTION:This proposal examines how multimodal assessment and data visualization can strengthen educator preparation by expanding the ways candidates\, faculty\, and program leaders engage with evidence. Building on scholarship in multimodality and multiliteracies\, the session argues that contemporary learning is increasingly mediated through visual\, textual\, oral\, and digital modes\, requiring teacher education programs to design assessment systems that reflect this complexity. At Touro University Graduate School of Education\, assessment data had been fragmented across multiple Excel files\, limiting timely analysis and obscuring patterns across programs. To address this challenge\, we integrated Watermark Student Learning & Licensure with Microsoft Power BI to consolidate candidate submissions\, key assessments\, and placement data into interactive dashboards. This shift enabled real-time analysis of program-level and cross-program performance\, including comparisons across traditional and alternative certification pathways. Research on multimodal digital classroom assessment suggests that combining multimodal perspectives with performance assessment theory can broaden the kinds of evidence available for instructional decision-making while also raising important questions about validity\, literacy demands\, and the interpretation of evidence. Similarly\, scholarship on multimodal teacher education emphasizes that such work requires strong assessment support and reconceptualization of how learning is represented and evaluated. The session positions dashboards not merely as reporting tools\, but as pedagogical and organizational instruments that support data literacy\, shared inquiry\, and continuous improvement. By enabling faculty and stakeholders to interpret assessment evidence through multiple modes\, the approach aligns with research showing that multimodal learning can deepen understanding and engagement\, particularly when preservice teachers encounter content through varied media and representational forms. Participants will learn how integrated assessment systems can support transparency\, accreditation readiness\, and evidence-based program improvement in educator preparation contexts.

SUMMARY:Increasing Student Participation in the College Classroom Using the Good Behavior Game
DESCRIPTION:There is an overall lack of engagement in undergraduate classrooms across college and university settings\, even though student engagement contributes to positive learning outcomes and success. However\, "engagement" is a broad term and can encompass many smaller\, more specific measure\, like in-class participation. Using in-class participation as a proxy for engagement\, instructors in higher-education have tried implementing a variety of strategies\, like iClicker technology\, response cards\, and Kahoot! to try to promote student engagement. Some of these strategies\, may be costly (e.g.\, iClickers)\, time consuming or childish (e.g.\, response cards)\, or not practice (e.g.\, use of smartphones or other devices to participate in Kahoot! or similar programs). This study investigated the use of the Good Behavior Game (GBG)\, a behavioral strategy requiring minimal resources to try to increase in-class participation in a college classroom to try to promote student engagement. In the class in which the GBG was implemented\, we saw a large and immediate increase in in-class participation\, which lasted for the duration of the period in which the GBG was implemented\, in comparison to the class that did not play the GBG\, where we saw much lower levels of in-class participation. Implications of our results\, limitations\, and ideas for future research and implementation will be discussed.

SUMMARY:From Buoy to Classroom: Data Visualization\, Multimodal Pedagogy\, and Teacher Preparation
DESCRIPTION:This proposal examines how a community-engaged data visualization project in art teacher preparation became a model for pedagogical transfer\, as a preservice teacher adapted its multimodal methods into their student teaching practicum with K-12 learners. The project began in a university art education context where preservice teachers engaged with environmental data collected from Lake Erie as a material for artistic inquiry\, visual communication\, and media-based learning. Working across data literacy\, visual literacy\, and digital tools\, students translated complex environmental information into creative forms that connected artmaking with natural phenomena. This case traces how one student team member carried their project experience forward into student teaching\, designing a data visualization project for their own students. This application of university coursework to classroom practice illustrates how preservice teachers reinterpret art- and science-based methodologies in relation to learners\, settings\, curricular goals\, and available materials. The presentation will examine this process as an example of multimodal pedagogy\, cross-generational mentorship\, and emerging teacher identity formation.By foregrounding the relationship between the original data visualization project and its later adaptation in a student teaching practicum\, this work offers insight into how educator preparation programs can support candidates in developing transferable and innovative pedagogical practices. It also considers how data visualization can function as a bridge between art education\, environmental inquiry\, and digital media. Ultimately\, the project demonstrates how multimodal learning experiences in teacher preparation can travel beyond the university classroom and become meaningful teaching practices in K–12 settings.

SUMMARY:The Impact of Mentorship on Preservice Teachers
DESCRIPTION:As schools of education increasingly shift responsibility for preservice teacher (PST) preparation to school-based settings\, the role of mentor teachers (MTs) has become central to the development of new science educators. Two related but distinct lines of inquiry address this shift. One examines reciprocity within the MT/PST relationship — the dynamic through which mentors and mentees mutually exchange support\, knowledge\, and skills (Cropanzano & Mitchell\, 2005\; Homans\, 1971). Although no legal mandates require MT preparation\, research consistently demonstrates that mentors who receive structured training report greater confidence and effectiveness\, with corresponding benefits for PST learning outcomes (Parker et al.\, 2021\; Ambrisotti\, 2014\; Hudson & Hudson\, 2016). Without such support\, preparation varies widely\, creating inconsistencies that affect both mentor effectiveness and PST development. The other examines the role a structured community of practice consisting of mentors\, PSTs\, and master teachers plays in PST’s ability to engage students in science practices.&nbsp\;The integrated analysis showed that strong\, collaborative mentor relationships were a primary driver of gains in pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) specific to science practices (PCK-SP). At the same time\, PST agency strongly predicted growth across all outcomes. The CoP served as a critical support structure\, acting as a “third space” and surrogate mentor that provided access to collective expertise and experiential learning. This study’s findings support a practice-informed model utilizing “three pillars” for PST growth founded on collaborative mentorship\, PST agency\, and community structures. By aligning these pillars\, teacher preparation programs can better equip new educators to enact ambitious science teaching\, ultimately advancing equitable science education.

SUMMARY:Preparing Teachers for Complexity: Critical Reflection as a Catalyst for School Change
DESCRIPTION:This session highlights the practices in a yearlong\, field‑embedded practicum in an alternative certification program that invites novice special education teachers to view their schools not just as workplaces\, but as sites of inquiry. Rather than separating coursework from practice\, the course is designed around learning while doing\, using ethnographic observation and action research as pedagogical approaches. Through a series of scaffolded assignments\, special education teachers examine policies\, practices\, and student learning and engagement to understand how learners are impacted by power and structural inequities. As they analyze their school setting\, teachers ask questions about their assumptions and experiences to uncover implicit biases\, building critical consciousness through ongoing reflection. As part of the session\, a former student\, now an instructor and PhD candidate\, will share her experiences in this course and how the inquiry practices developed continue to shape her current research.&nbsp\;The ethnography project in semester one asks teachers to identify a problem of practice and consider a change they can realistically implement in semester two to ensure greater equity and inclusion for their learners. Course materials\, used as data sources\, include teacher reflections\, ethnographic notes\, student ethnography assignments\, and action research plans\, which will be analyzed and shared for deeper discussion. Grounded in critical reflection and Freire’s problem-posing education\, this course supports candidates in moving from observer to change agent\, preparing them to recognize inequities\, examine practices\, and design interventions within their own school communities. This session will discuss the implications of this approach to teacher training\, with participants engaging in discussions about how new teachers can feel empowered to create change in their classrooms and schools.

SUMMARY:Professional Judgment in the Age of AI: Preparing Future Teachers for an AI-Enabled Profession
DESCRIPTION:As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into educational practice\, educator preparation programs face growing pressure to determine how best to prepare future teachers for AI-enabled classrooms. At the same time\, teacher candidates are expressing a desire for more learning opportunities related to AI and its role in teaching and learning. This presentation describes the design and implementation of an AI literacy module within a graduate teacher preparation program that was developed in response to candidate demand and grounded in the concept of professional judgment. Rather than focusing solely on tool use\, the module engaged candidates in critically evaluating AI-generated content\, considering ethical implications\, identifying limitations and biases\, and making instructional decisions that prioritize learner needs. The session will share the rationale for integrating AI literacy into teacher education\, highlight key design principles and learning experiences\, and discuss emerging lessons learned. Attendees will leave with practical ideas for incorporating AI literacy into educator preparation coursework while emphasizing professional judgment as an essential competency for future educators.
